World Cup 2010 – where England fails, gadgets win

As a forever optimistic (and thus forever disappointed) England fan, I jumped at the offer to be taken on a press trip to Cape Town to see them take on Algeria and immediately set about getting myself teched-up for the trip.

South African Airlines is not gadget-friendly: phones had to be turned off for the entire journey, even if they had a flight mode. All those episodes of Mad Men I had on my phone would have to wait. Strangely, electric razors and calculators were fine (which is good news if you like to pass the time by shaving calculators).

To make matters worse, the in-flight entertainment broke down when I was halfway through canine-based tearjerker Marley & Me. It saved me from weeping in front of a plane full of football fans but left me with little more than the German chap who snored like Darth Vader for entertainment. Luckily, I had my noise-cancelling headphones and iPod Classic to drown both him and the drone of the engines out.

On arrival, it was LogMeIn Ignition that reminded me this trip was a little bit about business and not all pleasure and I hopped through a couple of work ‘chores’ before gearing up for the big game… That was about where it stopped. Thought I’d best watch out for data roaming charges, I wasn’t just trying to avoid doing any work, honest.

Unfortunately, you don’t need me to tell you how England’s trip to South Africa ended. Mine ended with me typing this up on my phone as we experienced moderate turbulence around 35,000 feet above the Sahara desert. Perhaps I should’ve turned it off after all. Shh, nobody tell the stewardess.
