Report from Trevor Davies at The News of The World

It was great to see such an improvement in England's performance. They were like a new team. Amazing what a round of beers from the manager can do for morale. The gaffer must have taken a leaf out of Maradona's book and started to show some love for his lads. The goal came as such a relief, although it was a bit soft. But we deserved to win and should have had at least one more.

I was convinced the ref had given the off-side goal scored by Rooney. Which is always funny when you are still cheering when everyone has gone quiet. After the final whistle, I was even more relieved that we had come top and would be facing Ghana on Saturday. But ten seconds later the news came through that USA had scored and we'd be playing Germany on Sunday.

But I'm convinced we can beat them. Two of our guys, Gerard and Heskey, scored against the old foe in the 5-1 win in Munich. Bring it on.
